ESTATE HOUSES

DATE 2004-2006

A family of dwelling types designed for a range of sites within a largely pre-fabricated estate in East London.

We developed a ‘pattern book’ approach to the design of these dwellings, inspired by the notion that each new pair of homes would fit into a specific context within the same estate. A family of elements are combined in unique ways across the range of dwelling types, including green/sedum roofs, expressed pre-fabricated and timber panels, window seats and corner windows. The project aimed to achieve a strategic upgrading and infilling of the existing estate in a way that delivers a series of contemporary homes without diminishing the strong character of the surroundings, and that is capable of deployment across a long timescale without losing the integrity of the new insertions.
