GOLD LANE

CLIENT Notting Hill Housing
DATE 2002-2004

Within the Watling Estate conservation area, 8 new houses arranged in 3 clusters replaced forty-five vandalised garages. The scheme has totally transformed a neglected area of backland into a ‘front’ street with its own identity and purpose; rejuvenating what had previously been a focal point for crime into a domestic streetscape with 24-hour surveillance.

The sustainability strategy for the scheme aimed at passive energy solutions and the creation of a biodiverse habitat. This included green roofs, robust and graffiti-proof gabion walls of recycled hardcore and living green walls.

“a great example of a development that people want to live in and is firmly of the 21st century, sensitive to its environment and to residents’ needs… its design encourages sustainable lifestyles in its residents, while lifting their spirits too.”

“Textbook regeneration, benefiting both new and existing residents… low energy development of exceptional visual quality.”
