Located equidistant from Limehouse and Stepney Green stations, the project sits in a context of pre-20th Century workers’ homes, extensive post-war development, and the commercial spines of Mile End Road and Commercial Road. Our brief was to provide high quality affordable housing on a site surrounded by both post-war housing blocks and lower-scale older homes; the project therefore had mediating these surroundings, and uniting them, as its core goal at an urban scale.
Each block has a planted roof, softening its profile on the skyline and again providing a natural habitat. These roofs are integrated with communal heating and water heating through solar-thermal technology to all dwellings.
Planning Achieved 2008.
