In collaboration with Lucy Orta, London College of Fashion and Europa.
As a first phase of our involvement in the European Roma Mapping (EuRoMa) project, we delivered an exhibition which tells the story of contemporary Roma experience, to accompany a celebratory concert for Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month at Conway Hall, and a subsequent event in Leeds.
Each theme of the exhibition is contained within a travelling case, each of which is supported by a stack of relevant 'supports' - from the nomad bags with which Roma frequently arrive in the UK through to printers' boxes of RSG publications. The exhibition fits within its own cases for transportation, drawing on pertinent themes of transience and permanence.
We also hosted the exhibition at our own studio inbetween its two main venues.
The next phase of work, currently in development, will involve mapping of the contemporary Roma situation in London, with a focus upon ideas of home and dwelling. This work received a preliminary presentation at an event in Bucharest in October 2008 - see project page.
